  1. Return of the Serifs: The Topography Plays


With flat design came the desire to go flat — so much that you wish to remove topography and the font play. While the flat design era seems to be ending now, it has been noticed the typefaces as a trend is getting attention and importance back with serifs.


For example, on Kickstarter’s latest website, you can see how they use serifs on some parts of their website’s design. This adds awesomeness to their clean and modern web design. Serifs add to the beauty and authenticity by creating a timeless look for a website. The Hustler Collective anticipates seeing more serifs in the top designs trends in 2018.

  1. Animations that don’t distract

Animations, as a subject, have been related to gaming and creating subtle effects a lot, but their potential in improving user experience has been under-explored. It can make the user interface more appealing and make it easier for the visitor to get around your website. However, you will have to get the mix of textual content, visual content and animation effects right, if you don’t want the loading time go up drastically.

Animations in websites have advanced, and the credit goes to jQuery and CSS3, but recently, the web-designers have gone overboard in the quest to animate all things. In 2018, We may expect animations to be used with more restraint and intention — which means they add to the experience of the user without distracting or confusing them.


A fantastic example of the same is the Concrete Rep website. As you scroll through it, different images appear, and the text also changes. It is done well in that it helps add uniqueness to the experience without taking away from the artists and their work.

  1. Sharp gradients

Colors have the power to make or break a web design. Web design trends have changed at a fast pace in the recent years, with some trends disappearing for some time and then gradually coming back. That is precisely the case with the gradient designs. Gradients are making a comeback, and the multi-tone effects are the modern way to design. We view this trend to show up on many websites, which is prevalent on Spotify.

The latest trend to appear is the new way of presenting a gradient. Sharp gradients add visual interest to the overall-gradient tone beyond a slight change in the color scheme. Seeing the color changing on a sharp line helps an ordinary gradient of 2015 look different and much more modern for 2018.


An example of the same is the Sketch’s website. In the bottom right, you can see the purple gradient which increases alongside the sharp diagonal lines. Also, as you scroll down through their homepage, you will notice a circle bull’s eye effect that is done in the same way. This helps to elevate the gradient into something that’s more eye-catchy by applying a subtle texture in addition to the gradient.

This is very simple to do and easily attracts the user’s attention.

  1. Diagonal Section Breaks

Whoever expressed once that horizontal breaks had to be… horizontal was so wrong. Nowadays designers have been playing around with the amount describing how horizontal a line break or section break has to be by putting it on edge. Separating sections of a web page by using a sharp diagonal helps to add to the visual appeal. This makes a unique website layout that can help separate it from most sites which are still using the very horizontal break of circa 2014.


Stripe’s website is a great example of this trend, which when done well, can produce some fantastic results. Not only do they utilize sharp gradients, but they visually break up sections of their homepage using an acute 10-degree angle. This results in nicely delineated visual areas and offers a unique way to present content. This design trend in 2018 is a cutting-edge take for the world of designs.

  1. Custom Graphics and Illustrations

Illustrations are the most incredible and versatile tools that can find many different uses in making a design. When it comes to web design, we can see a vast variety of implementations for the same.

Companies are optimally using these kinds of graphics and illustrations to share their storylines, guide users through their site, and fill empty spots on their websites.

It seems that in the real world of web design, illustrations tend to perform both functions at one time. They beautify and clarify simultaneously. And if they are only doing one of these, you might need to ask yourself why. Perhaps by putting illustrations to work, you can fulfill both roles to leverage the design element, for it is all truly worth.

It can be difficult to make a company’s website look unique through stock photos alone, so many of them are now opting to use custom illustrations for conveying their unique message or USP to differentiate from their competition. Using custom graphics helps companies to be perceived as more human and relatable to the user, and it is also a great way to show complex ideas more simply.


Twitter’s new tweet box is a prime of this trend. Twitter went all in 2017 with the “rounded corners” design trend, making their tweet box full of rounded corners: From the tweet box itself to the buttons; even to the avatar. I anticipate more websites using rounded corners as 2018 progresses.

  1. Interactive storytelling

An example for the same is the CNN’s most recent story about global warming and Greenland’s melting glaciers. By applying responsive design principles to individual elements of a logo, and stripping out detail about screen size, a more clear and appropriate logo can be displayed. The concept aims to move branding away from fixed, rigid guidelines into a more flexible and contextual system.

    WOW! This post is missing all the element according to its title. Please reduce the number of ads and first improve the quality of your content. I liked few of your post but things are expected to be better with each post. Also Kickstarter is using sans serif as their primary font IMO. Anyways, keep posting. 👍
